"It seems to me the book has not just aesthetic values-- the charming little clothy box of the thing, the smell of the glue, even the print, which has its own beauty. But there's something about the sensation of ink on paper that is in some sense a thing, a phenomenon rather than an epiphenomenon. I can't break the association of electric trash with the computer screen. Words on the screen give the sense of being just another passing electronic wriggle."

—John Hoyer Updike (b. 1932) American writer, Rabbit, Run, Rabbit at Rest

Who We Are

C.E. Brehm Memorial Public Library District

Originally a Carnegie Library, we became a district library serving three townships comprising Mt. Vernon, Illinois in 1989.  In 1999, the library celebrated 100 years of history and service to the community.  The district expanded in 2003 to cover 15 townships in Jefferson County.  The library staff makes over 71,000+ items available to you. A special genealogy collection is included.

The library is governed by an elected board and is open 64 hours per week.

The library Board of Directors is empowered to formulate reasonable rules and regulations . . . in order to render the use of the library of the greatest benefit to the greatest number.

Library Closing days

In addition to the genealogy area, library staff are available in circulation, reference and junior departments. Inquiries concerning library operations may be directed to the Library Director.
